About Borris Golf Club:

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of County Carlow, Borris Golf Club stands as a testament to the rich golfing history of Ireland. Established in 1907 on the McMurrough Kavanagh estate, the club boasts a mature parkland course that has challenged and delighted golfers for over a century. The story of Borris Golf Club begins with the vision of William McMorrough Kavanagh, a local Member of Parliament. Initially, he laid out the course for his sons, but recognizing the growing interest in golf, he generously offered the land and clubhouse to the newly formed Borris Golf Club in exchange for an annual fee. This act of patronage solidified the club’s foundation and by 1909 membership had already surpassed 100. However, the club’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. By 1925, Borris Golf Club had fallen into decline. Fortunately, Major Arthur Kavanagh, another member of the McMurrough Kavanagh family, stepped forward and spearheaded a revival effort. Under his leadership, the course was revitalized, ensuring its continued legacy. Today, Borris Golf Club proudly holds the distinction of being one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland. The strategically placed trees along the course provide a delightful challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Though a nine-hole course by design, the clever use of alternating tee boxes Including a different par three thirteenth hole, instead of the fourth hole, creates the impression of playing 18 distinct holes, offering a unique and engaging golfing experience. Beyond the course itself, Borris Golf Club is renowned for its warm hospitality. The clubhouse bar is a welcoming haven for golfers to relax and unwind after a round. Function rooms are also available for booking, making the club a popular choice for events and gatherings. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a newcomer to the sport, Borris Golf Club extends a warm welcome and offers attractive packages for societies and non-members. An interesting footnote in the club’s history is its role in pioneering junior scratch events. Borris Golf Club is credited with hosting first such event, with Pat Mulcare, who later achieved fame in the Walker Cup, being among the early winners. Borris Golf Club’s enduring legacy is a testament to its beautiful setting, challenging course, and unwavering dedication to hospitality. As golfers continue to tee off under the watchful gaze of Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs Mountains, Borris Golf Club promises to remain a cherished destination for generations to come.
